On perusing back through the Deaths in 2013 site, I noted the following listed under June 18th:
The House of Names site http://www.houseofnames.com/freese-family-crest?a=54323-224 claims the name as having come from "Friesen" of the Swabian-Swiss dialect that means "to dig ditches". Okaay, so the definition of ditch:
Note the etymology of ditch:
Of course there's more... butt I'll leave that to you.
Gene Freese, 79, American baseball player, complications of back surgeryGene's surname "Freese" is what stands out, especially since reading a news article where one the reasons given as to why the flood in Calgary was so bad was that the ground was still frozen in some areas and so the deluge of rain didn't absorb into the earth as it other wise does.

trench dug in the ground for drainageSo what are the chances?! Definitely enough to warrant more research. Note the following from Gene Freese's wiki page:
Eugene Lewis Freese (January 8, 1934 – June 18, 2013)January 8th is my stepson's birthday!! As I stated in my previous post, my stepson lives in Calgary... a few minutes walk from the flooded area. The only thing that saved his family from being evacuated is that they live on the slope of Mount Royal. Sooo... what are the chances?!
Note the etymology of ditch:
dike (n.) Old English dic "trench, ditch; an earthwork with a trench; moat," from Proto-Germanic *dik- (cf. Old Norse diki "ditch, fishpond," Old Frisian dik "mound, dam," Middle Dutch dijc"mound, dam, pool," Dutch dijk "dam," German Deich "embankment"), from PIE root *dheigw- "to pierce, fasten" (cf. Sanskrit dehi- "wall," Old Persian dida "wall, stronghold, fortress," Persian diz).
ditch (n.) Old English dic "ditch, dike," a variant of dike (q.v.). Last ditch (1715) refers to the last line of military defenses. That's audd... the mention above re wall... considering that David Wall is listed on the Deaths in 2013 site, having passed away on the same day as Gene Freese. And come to think of it, then there's journalist Michael Hastings (33yrs old) ... and then Garde Gardom who also died on the same day. So it seems the communication is: make haste to guard/protect by digging ditches, damning up, building walls.
Of course there's more... butt I'll leave that to you.
