Today I read a few more pages from a book that my daughter had recommended-- Half the Sky, by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn. On page 55 was the mention of a British philanthropist named William Wilberforce. Since this involved a twin cluster synchronicity surrounding the twin number 55 and the name William, I decided to investigate the man a little further.
Note the following excerpts from wikipedia that I found meaningful :
William Wilberforce (24 August 1759 – 29 July 1833)
He headed the parliamentary campaign against the British slave trade for twenty-six years until the passage of the Slave Trade Act of 1807.
Wilberforce was convinced of the importance of religion, morality and education. He championed causes and campaigns such as the Society for Suppression of Vice, British missionary work in India, the creation of a free colony in Sierra Leone, the foundation of the Church Mission Society, and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. His underlying conservatism led him to support politically and socially repressive legislation, and resulted in criticism that he was ignoring injustices at home while campaigning for the enslaved abroad.
In 1462, in what is now Sierra Leone was visited by the Portuguese explorer Pedro de Sintra, who named it Serra Leoa, meaning "Lioness Mountains".[11][12] Sierra Leone later became an important centre of thetransatlantic trade in slaves until 11 March 1792 when Freetown was founded by the Sierra Leone Company as a home for former enslaved from (or freed by) the British Empire.[13] In 1808, Freetown became aBritish Crown Colony, and in 1896, the interior of the country became a British Protectorate
